I will never forget sitting in the audience during her first performance at Wicked and during “Thank Goodness,” my mom turned to me and said, “She looks just like Evita!”
I am so excited for her and she is going to be absolutely wonderful in Evita this spring!
I ill never forget seeing Christina DeCicco’s first performance as Glinda back in 2007 and during “Thank Goodness” my mom turned to me and said, “She looks like Evita!” Now she’s actually going to play Evita. Oh. My. God. Words cannot express how excited/happy I am for her!
You guys I literally just freaked the fuck out upon reading the complete cast for the Evita revival. I cannot stand Elena Roger, who they’re bringing in for Eva, and my seeing the show (even though I absolutely love it) was contingent upon who they cast as the Eva alternate.
Christina DeCicco (Wicked tour, Sister Act, The Marvelous Wonderettes) is the Eva alternate. I AM SO EXCITED.
WORDS ARE NOT A THING.
R.I.P. Mirissa. I didn’t know you very well but you were such a nice person and always had something good to say about everyone.
I was initially nervous about seeing this, but I am SO glad I did! It was wonderful and I LOVED what they did with it!
I saw the show an embarrassingly high number of times (9) between Broadway (8) and tour (1) and hadn’t seen it since closing night, which, as Kate Rockwell put it when I spoke with her after “Hair” last spring, a “shit show.”
The theater is in the round and so there was no giant sorority house, classroom, salon, etc. The aisles were used for the set at different points of the show and the cast (and the dogs…) used the aisles exclusively for entrances and exits. The show was very “in the moment” and current. The cast were constantly pulling out cell phones, such as in “Omigod You Guys” and other big ensemble numbers and really communicated to each other like college students, which I thought added a lot to the show. They did unfortunately have to cut the jump ropes from “Whipped into Shape,” due to space confines, but it worked really well, as the first half of the number was Brooke and the guys with exercise bands in her workout video and the second half of the number, when Callahan and the interns went into the jail, the inmates came on and it was like she was teaching a class, so it worked well sans jump ropes.
The cast was outstanding. Kelly Felthous was adorable as Elle and although her voice was a little nasally at times, it didn’t come off as being annoying. She reminded me of a cross between Laura Bell with her personality and Becky with her vocals. I loved Will Ray as Warner for being a completely loveable jerk and Barrett Hall as Emmett for being a completely adorable, absolutely hot nerd. His vocals were a tad weak, but it was closing. Paul Jackel was delightfully creepy as Professor Callahan. Gaelen Gilliland was Paulette and I saw her as an understudy in the role on Broadway back in December of 2007. Back then her Paulette was very reserved and quiet and today she let it all loose and really shined. The audience LOVED her and her comedic timing was SPOT ON. And Kate Loprest was great as Vivienne. Despite being tiny, she was in charge and really had it in for Elle. Taryn Darr was a great Brooke, her timing was spot on and her delivery of the liposuction line had the audience laughing hysterically. Tiffany Engen, Sara Andreas and Allysa Shorte were hilarious as Serena, Margot and Pilar and were always in the moment, even when just watching from the sidelines. The ensemble was smaller than normal, but strong and they sounded and looked great. Oh, and Chico the chihuahua and Nellie the bull dog from the Original Broadway Cast came out of retirement for this and they, of course, stole every scene they were in… especially Nellie.
All in all it was definitely worth the hour and a half drive and I had a great time with an old friend, as well!
List the last 10 things you saw at the theatre in order from your most recent:
(no repeats)
Who was the best performer in number one?
Rashidra and Christina.
Why did you go to see number two?
I’ve been waiting to see it for YEARS and it was CHEAP and only about a 2 hour drive from home.
Can you remember a line/lyric from number three that you liked?
Ummmm not in particular, but it was cute.
What would you give number four out of ten?
A solid 8. I’m curious to see it on Broadway this fall.
Was there someone hot in number five?
Yes.
What was number six about?
Clothes. Shoes. Life. (Copying this from Natalie)
Who was your favourite actor in number seven?
Donna Murphy or Nicole Parker.
What was your favourite bit in number eight?
Uh it was kind of a terrible show…. but Jenni did a good job!
Would you see number nine again?
Ummmm maybe? If Lisa Brescia and Judy McLane were still there.
What was the worst thing about number ten?
The audience kind of fell flat. And it was the night before a blizzard so it was a smallish audience, too.
Which was best?
Sister Act. Particularly the last two times.
Which was worst?
Cactus Flower.
Did any make you cry?
When Rashidra came out in the white dress at curtain call of Sister Act last week and the entire audience was on their feet. Coolest freaking moment EVER.
Did any make you laugh?
I’m sure they all did at one point or another.
Which roles would you like to play in any of them?
In any of them? Mary Robert in Sister Act…
Which one did you have best seats for?
Ummm well since this doesn’t include repeats, but whatever, front row mezz for Sister Act when Christina went on as Mary Robert and front row orchestra at Sister Act when I went with Natalie.
